Considering the closeness of the Ralston community and the schooling system, I believe that a “Grad Walk” would enhance the quality of life in the community. The artifact I have created is a small flyer to advertise the walk, which happens May 27, 2016 at Ralston Elementary School. The Grad Walk would happen every year as latest high school seniors come close to graduating.
The Grad Walk would involve graduating high school seniors to walk down the halls of the elementary and middle schools, while the younger children and teachers stand and sit on the sides. This shows the elementary school students the importance of going to school and graduating. They’ll be watching their neighbors, brothers and sisters parade through the halls in their caps and gowns, they see the people they look up to accomplishing something so great, graduating, but on a more personal level. They are able to see what they can achieve, and inspires them because years later they’ll be able to walk down the halls as graduating seniors. Not only does the Grad Walk benefit the young children but also the graduating seniors. Walking through the halls, the graduating high school seniors realize how influential they are and they see that they are role models for the students in grades below them. This also gives the seniors a moment to reflect on how far they’ve come, because they were once in the same spot as the elementary and middle school students. The teachers are able to see how their students have progressed, assuming they’ve had the students in previous years.
This would create a greater sense of community in Ralston beginning at a younger age. It would give the younger generations a chance to support each other and come together to create stronger connections amongst them. The Grad Walk would enhance the quality of life in Ralston, because it’s a glorious moment for all who are involved. The teachers see the progress the students they’ve taught have made, the graduating class sees all they they’ve accomplished and how inspiring they are to younger students, and the younger students aspire to be in the graduating class walking down the halls some day.
