Ralston Ecological Preservation Society

The Ralston Ecological Preservation Society is a grouping of local community members that has formed to spread across all wards. They currently meet weekly with meetings switching between member’s houses, Sally Huang makes the best ambrosia salad (is any ambrosia salad good?). The purpose of the society is to preserve and record the diverse fauna and flora ecosystem that is Ralston. Projects by the society include, fauna and flora catalogs where they give information about different native species, Big Brown Bat habitat protections in the wake of white nose syndrome population decimations, and a hunt for the oldest tree. Sally thinks its the Oak on Poplar in Ward 3, but Hector Grant thinks its the Maple on Grove St in Ward 1. “That Maple easily could have been here from before colonists,” the young man was quoted saying.

The society has also done work with the public gardens and home garden growers in helping identify which local plants would thrive best in Ralston’s unique climate. 25 batboxes have been hung in various places around Ralston near fresh water sources in hopes of bringing back this important part of the ecosystem after its near destruction 10 years ago. All in the hopes of creating and preserving a beautiful space for all living things to live.

Department of Recycling and Waste Management Update

The Ralston Department of Recycling and Waste Management is now implemented in to the town’s infrastructure. There are 3 drop off points throughout Ralston.

They are strategically placed to be spread out throughout the main wards, and close to high-traffic areas like the highschool. The dropoff points serve as a place where people can dropoff their recycling and have an attendant help them sort it into the proper categories. This recycling is then transported off the island to the nearest mainland recycling center.

Biological Research Center

The Biological Research Center studies local wildlife and fauna to discover new information about them. The research center also runs tests on local water sources and marine wildlife populations to determine the health of the local ecosystem. The financial benefits of the institution are very significant as many grants and funds used to fund the research are subsequently dispensed into the Ralston economy by the employees. In addition to economic growth, the presence of the Biological Research Center in Ralston promotes environmental stewardship and community engagement. The data collected from research on wildlife, plant species, and water quality will be used to inform local conservation efforts, ensuring that the region’s natural resources are preserved for future generations. Educational programs, public lectures, and citizen science initiatives hosted by the center will encourage residents to participate in environmental monitoring and learn more about the unique ecosystems surrounding them. Collaborations with local schools and universities will provide hands-on learning opportunities and internships, fostering interest in biological sciences and creating a

Public Radio

I think that Ralston would benefit greatly from a local radio station a la KEXP crossed with WBUR. A local radio station would create a place for locals to create social connections over shared interests in the radio. Having a local place to broadcast news and music that is uniquely Ralstonian would create a more unified culture that would give Ralstoners something other than location that ties them together. Currently a Ward Oneian and a Ward Threeer have very little in common other than living on the same island. But as soon as they listen to the same music and same news there’s something new that is shared. Another great thing, more specifically about KEXP, is that it gives a platform for smaller groups in the same place that larger artists may have performed. The NPR side of the station could give voice to those that feel ignored by the larger population allowing for local feelings to have a solid place to be voiced. Someone from Ward Four might share the same opinion as someone from Ward Two, but they may never have known it until they were made aware of it in some way, and what better way than radio. All this come together to creating connections between people who may otherwise have never interacted in any meaningful way.

Ralston Farmers Market

In Ralston, people lack a number of different events that might strengthen their community. One is a farmers market. A place for small, local businesses to come together, for local artists and musicians to come together, and a hub for new friendships and community. This should go under “non-profit organizations and space” for blatant reasons. I had a farmers market in my town as a kid and I have very fond memories of being there and dancing to live music and getting fresh strawberries, bread, and cheese and sitting in the grass with my friends. The farmers market would happen every week and be closed or moved inside during the winter. The farmers market would include local food vendors, (fruit, veggies, herbs) and local bakeries, local craftsmen (knife sharpening, soaps, stained glass, handmade knitted work) and local music artists (new band every week). This would amplify the amount of people who know each other and might help people find others with common interests. It also just gets people out of the house and doing things.

Ralston Art Museum — Ward 2

In the town of Ralston, a tight knit community that supports locals, it makes absolutely no sense to have an art museum that looks like a pretentious “modern art” holding cell. It is a complete eyesore that exists in ward 2 and should be replaced with an art gallery featuring local artists and built to look like it actually belongs in this town. This proposed art gallery will be made to look like the surrounding architecture but with a public graffiti wall on its front for locals to paint on, this wall will be cleaned once each season as it will allow more people to paint on it. Photos of previous graffiti walls will be featured in the gallery. Each season is also when the pieces within the gallery will be changed and flyers will be put up to advertise free spaces for local artists to display their art work in the gallery. There will be a 5 dollar entry fee as this place would need funding to stay open.

Mental Health Services

Ralston has become a much better place after making mental health care free. This idea has touched the lives of so many people in the town. Making mental health not stigmatized, like outside of Ralston. As well as helping people through things like addiction and depression. Focusing on mental health has also reduced social anxiety, so more people spend time with others now! This has been instrumental to Ralston’s recent booming economy as well as tourism. This skyrocketed after the change as people wanted to view the huge change, which was the first in the US. The inclusion of free mental health care has changed Ralston for the better, making everyone in it happier. Focusing on Mental health has improved test scores for students while making them less stressed. As well as reducing crime by stopping it before it ever even happens. This has also made the town of Ralston happier than ever before, making it have one of the highest quality of living!

Ralston Historical Society

The purpose the Ralston Historical Society (RHS) serves is that of preservation. It was originally founded by common people and, over the years, was incorporated into the local government due to their effectiveness at keeping records. The RHS now resides in two main buildings; city hall, where it’s main offices are located, and the RHS records building down the street from city hall, where all the documents are actually kept.
